Curriculum dos Professores:

Erika Benavides, DDS, PhD, obtained her dental degree from Universidad del Valle in Cali, Colombia. After this, she completed an externship program at the Medical University of South Carolina in the Craniofacial Genetics Department. She obtained her General Practice Residency (GPR) Certificate from the University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC) and the Truman Medical Center. In 2002, she became an NIH/NIDCR trainee while pursuing an interdisciplinary doctoral degree with emphasis in Oral Biology and Biomedical Engineering. She graduated from the Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology residency program at UMKC in 2003 and became a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology in 2004. She received her PhD degree in 2006 and subsequently joined the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. Dr. Benavides is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan and serves as the Chair of the Research and Technology Committee of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. Her faculty practice is dedicated to cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).

Dr. Scott Conley, DMD, is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Michigan. Dr. Conley received his dental degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He received his orthodontic degree from Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he then served as full time faculty for seven years. Dr. Conley has received a number of clinical research awards including the 2005 and 2007 Edward H. Angle Research Awards and the 2007 American Journal of Orthodontics CDABO Case Report of the Year. He also received the 2001 Robert M. Ricketts AAOF Faculty Development Award. His research interests include orthognathic surgery, obstructive sleep apnea, distraction osteogenesis, and orthodontic biomechanics. Dr. Conley is a member of several professional societies including the AAO, the Edward H. Angle Society, and the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association.

Dr. Sean Edwards, DDS, MD, FRCD(C), is the Chief of Pediatric Maxillofacial Surgery at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital and Surgical Director of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry's Dentofacial Deformity program. He obtained his dental degree at Dalhousie University School of Dentistry in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He then moved to the United States where he completed medical school, and his general surgical and oral and maxillofacial surgical training. He then completed a fellowship in Craniofacial Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh and a fellowship in Oncology and Microvascular Surgery at the University of Michigan. He is currently an Assistant Professor and Director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program. His main clinical interests involve the management and reconstruction of pediatric congenital, traumatic and oncologic deformities. He is widely published and has lectured locally, nationally and internationally on these topics.

Dr. André Haerian, DDS, PhD, is in private practice of Orthodontics and an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Michigan. Dr. Haerian obtained his dental education at McGill University in Montreal Canada. He completed his orthodontic education at the University of Detroit Mercy, following which he pursued a PhD degree in Oral Health ciences at the University of Michigan as the recipient of a biomaterials NIH dentist-scientist training grant. Dr. Haerian has served on multiple thesis committees for orthodontic residents. He co-teaches the graduate orthodontic biomaterials and biomechanics courses. Dr. Haerian is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. He has published multiple peer-reviewed papers, and chapters on biomaterials, and biomechanics. Dr. Haerian serves as a reviewer for the AJODO.

Dra. Nan Hatch, DDS, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Michigan. Dr. Hatch obtained her dental degree from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. She received her orthodontic training and a PhD in Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of Washington in Seattle. Dr. Hatch has received a number of research awards including the AADR and IADR 1st place Hatton Awards, and the John Haddad Junior Investigator and Harold M. Frost Young Investigator Awards from the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research. She also received the T.M. Graber and Robert E. Gaylord Teaching Fellowship Awards and the Orthodontic Post-Doctoral Fellowship Award from the AAO Foundation. Dr Hatch is a member of the AAO’s Council on Scientific Affairs and of the Great Lakes Association of Orthodontists (GLAO) board, and a reviewer for the AJODO. Dr. Hatch’s research interests include research in bone biology and the molecular etiology of craniofacial anomalies, as well as development ofbiologic mediators for orthodontic tooth movement and retention.

Dr. Sunil Kapila, BDS, MS, PhD, is the Robert W. Browne Endowed Professor and Chair of the Department of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Michigan. He also serves as the Director of Graduate Orthodontics. Dr. Kapila obtained his dental education at the University of Nairobi, Kenya. He completed his orthodontic education at the University of Oklahoma on a Fulbright-Hayes Scholarship, following which he pursued PhD in Oral Biology at the University of California San Francisco. Dr. Kapila has received several research awards including the AADR Hatton Award, the AAO Milo Hellman Award, the BF Dewel Honorary Research Award from the AAOF, and the Outstanding Alumnus Award from the University of Oklahoma. Dr. Kapila is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. Dr. Kapila’s NIH-funded research focuses on the hormonal basis for TMJ degeneration and periodontal bone biology. He has published many peer-reviewed papers, and chapters on these topics and on orthodontic biomaterials and biomechanics, and imaging. He has recently co-authored and published a top-selling orthodontic textbook “Current Therapy in Orthodontics” and has edited publications from proceedings of several scientific and clinical meetings including the Moyers Symposium. Dr. Kapila serves on the editorial board or as a reviewer of several journals.

Dr. James McNamara, DDS, PhD, received his dental and orthodontic education at the University of California, San Francisco, and a PhD in Anatomy from the University of Michigan. He serves as the Thomas M. and Doris Graber Endowed Professor in the Department of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry, and Research Scientist at the Center for Human Growth and Development. Over the past several years, he has supervised a series of prospective and retrospective investigations of commonly used orthodontic and orthopedic techniques. He is the author of a textbook, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, and Editor-in-Chief of the 46 volume Craniofacial Growth Monograph Series. Dr. McNamara has published numerous cientific articles, has written, edited or contributed to several books, and has presented courses and lectures in 35 countries. Dr. McNamara has received numerous awards including the Albert H. Ketcham Memorial Award, the Milo Hellman Research Award, the Jacob A. Salzmann Award and the James E. Brophy Distinguished Service Award from the AAO, the E. Sheldon Friel Memorial Lecturer from the European Orthodontic Society, the AAO Foundation’s BF Dewel Biomedical Research Award, the EH Angle 7th Biennial Outstanding Research Award, and delivered the John Valentine Mershon Memorial Lecture at the 2002 AAO annual session. Dr. McNamara is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and a Fellow of the American College of Dentists. Dr. McNamara also has maintained a private orthodontic practice in Ann Arbor since 1971.

Dr. Christopher Roberts, DDS, MS, received his dental education at the Ohio State University. He completed a General Practice Residency program and his orthodontic training at tDental Center in Rochester, New York. He holds a Masters Degree in Dental Research from the University of Rochester. Dr. Roberts has been active in organized orthodontics, having served as the President of the Great Lakes Association of Orthodontics. He has a private practice limited to ontics in Findlay, Ohio, and has been teaching in the Graduate Orthodontics Program at the University of Michigan since 1990.
